5th at Romaniacs despite neck injury

July 19, 2014 – Sibiu, Romania – KTM Factory rider Andreas „Letti“ Lettenbichler scores an astonishing 5th place at the 11th edition of the legendary Red Bull Romaniacs Extreme Enduro rally in Romania.

Letti came to Sibiu bringing uncertainty if he would be able to compete at all. Five weeks after the horrible crash during the KTM 2015 presentation his neck was far from 100% and he wasn’t able to train at all during those weeks. But Letti’s mentality does not include giving up – so he showed up at one of the races in the Extreme Enduro calendar that he loves most to see how far he would get.

The in-city Prologue in the middle of Sibiu was the first time for the German Extreme Enduro top gun from Kiefersfelden to sit on the bike for a good 5 weeks. Still he managed to finish the Prologue 4th which put him in a comfortable position for the first of four off road race days in Dracula’s backyard around Sibiu.

Since the results of the Prologue determine the starting order for the 1st race day Letti didn’t really need to spend too much attention to the GPS navigation with 3 excellent and experienced riders ahead.

Letti: „Riding was good and I managed to catch Paul Bolton who had won the Prologue. We rode together for a while but I couldn’t keep his pace due to the lack of training in the weeks prior to the rally – finishing 4th about 10 minutes behind Paul.

So I started again in 4th position on day #2 and rode some good time with Paul again until he made a mistake. I pulled away and had a lead of about 20 minutes on Paul at the end of the second day which put me 30 minutes ahead of Paul and therefore in a good position for the 4th place overall.

Race day #3 was pretty much the same story battling with Paul but he was in a really good shape compared with myself so he was able to make some good time. Day 3 wasn’t too hard technically but had a lot of pushing – not good for me given the lack of physical fitness. Paul came in about 13 minutes ahead of myself so we were almost equal entering race day #4.

While I concentrated on actually finishing the race Paul really kicked in big time and actually won the last day. Given the circumstances I’m really happy with the 5th place. My KTM once again was faultless and I thank my team and my sponsors!

Now I’ll get my body back to 100%, have some vacation and prepare for Red Bull Sea to Sky in Turkey at the end of September – a race I’m really looking forward to!
